Phoenix police arrested three suspects Monday in connection with the shooting death of a Phoenix man during a home invasion Oct. 1.
SWAT officers served at least two search warrants on Monday. One person was taken out of condo near 11th Avenue and Apache Street. Two others were arrested at an apartment complex near 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road.
Those taken into custody are Vincent Griego, 18; Ricardo Martinez, 18; and Rafael Machado, 20.
They were booked into jail on charges of murder, armed burglary and kidnapping.
A probable cause statement released Tuesday spelled out details of the Oct. 1 home invasion.
Several armed suspects forced entry into the home by kicking a door. The first suspect entering the residence pointed a long firearm at an elderly woman as he came through the door. As the woman attempted attempted to push the gun away, the suspect yelled for the residents to get down, the court document stated.
When Enrique Montes confronted the suspect, fight broke out that and the pair continued fighting through the bedroom, kitchen and into a hallway on the opposite side of the house.
A second suspect, identified as Griego, entered the home carrying a long firearm with a flashlight on the end of it, court paperwork stated. That suspect stood guard over two other residents of the house.
As Enrique Montes struggled with one of the suspects, he was fatally shot in the chest while in the hallway.
After the shooting, as the suspects fled the residence, they shoved the woman into a stove, breaking her ribs.
Montes was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
"That's my brother. I was raised with that man. He was a good man," said an obviously distraught Ray Comacho.
Comacho said Montes was a Vietnam War veteran who had lost two sons to shootings about 12 years ago and a daughter. Comacho said one son and a daughter survive.
Through an on going investigation, authorities said they learned the house had been targeted because the suspects believed several men living there had a large quantity of marijuana, according to the probable cause statement.
During questioning, Machado admitted to going by the home prior to the homicide to scout it out with Griego and Martinez, the court document said. Martinez was the one who set up the home invasion, according to court paperwork.
After the homicide, the three men returned to an apartment belonging to Kobeny Alvarez, authorities said.
Alvarez said Martinez, Machado, Griego and another suspect talked about the home invasion and said it was a "dry mission," investigators said. By "dry mission," Alvarez meant that Martinez, Machado and Griego did not get anything during the home invasion, court paperwork stated.
Griego said he had to "blow off some steam," according to the court document. As he said that, he opened the shotgun and pulled out an expended shell casing, court paperwork stated.
He then tossed the shell casing at Alvarez, investigators said. Alvarez said the shell casing was still warm and smelled of "burnt gunpowder," court documents stated.
Alvarez said he later saw the news and discovered the homicide.
