HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Thousands of South Mississippians gathered at Southern Miss Saturday morning to take part in an annual event to help fight heart disease. The 21st annual Forrest-Lamar Heart Walk for the American Heart Association brought out more than 3,500 people to take part in a 5-K event on the USM campus.
Money raised will go toward research and helping to curb childhood obesity.
"It is very important I think to keep the community involved on heart disease and that it is the number one killer in America in both men and women," said Dewanna Herklotz, chairperson for the 2013 Heart Walk. "I think as the community becomes more aware of heart disease, they want to take action and see if they can stop it," she said.
The fund-raising goal for the event was $183,000.
