There's a quick, new way for Mississippi Power Company customers to check on power outages in their area. An online interactive outage map is giving customers detailed information on outages caused by severe weather, traffic accidents or other external causes.

They can see how many people are affected and get an estimated time for power restoration. It can be accessed using a desktop computer, tablet or smart phone.

It's updated every five minutes.

"It can help you make some important decisions if the power is going to be out for an extended period of time and you have to get some plans together," said Jeff Shepard, spokesman for Mississippi Power Company. "We think it's going to be great during storms, and not just hurricanes, but also tornadoes, we have very active seasons in the spring," he said.

To access the map, just go to www.mississippipower.com and click on the outage map icon.
