JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A former Mississippi Department of Health employee has pleaded guilty in Hinds County Circuit Court to embezzling more than $23,000.

David Kweller, who worked in the Professional Licensure Division, will serve one year of house arrest and four years suspended, according to State Auditor Stacey Pickering.

Kweller is now prohibited from working for any governmental agency in Mississippi again, Pickering said in a press release.

Kweller pleaded guilty to embezzling public funds from May 28, 2010 to April 3, 2012. Kweller embezzled cash receipts, which were collected on behalf of the agency in the form of cash, checks, and money orders for professional licenses and regulatory fines and penalties.

The State Auditor's Officer served a demand to Kweller for $42,089.65, which includes the amount embezzled, interest and investigative costs.

Kweller had a previous felony conviction from 1990. He had worked for the department of health for more than 20 years and was fired in November.
