WARREN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Vicksburg man is facing multiple charges after a high-speed chase and manhunt that spanned two counties and 18 hours Tuesday and Wednesday.

Hinds County authorities say they have evidence to believe the suspect, William Charles Carroll, 38, is a high-ranking member of the Aryan Brotherhood, which is a violent white supremacist gang, according to the FBI.

Law enforcement cornered Carroll just off Interstate 20 between Bovina and Flowers Wednesday morning after an all-night search.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT team used a flash bang and other non-lethal tactics to get him to surrender after four hours of negotiations. Authorities say he was armed with a semi-automatic weapon with a 30-round clip.

Carroll was transported to the Hinds County Jail after being evaluated at the Central Mississippi Medical Center. He's been charged with careless driving, felony fleeing, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute while in the possession of a firearm.

According to the Hinds County Sheriff's Department, it all started Tuesday night when narcotics officers received a complaint and stopped a vehicle on Interstate 20. As investigators approached the driver, the vehicle fled and multiple agencies joined the pursuit for the vehicle on I-20 eastbound.

Once in Warren County, the suspect's vehicle exited the interstate at the Flowers exit and drove down Brabston Road. The suspect's vehicle and a Hinds County Sheriff's Office vehicle hit a tree that had fallen onto the roadway.

Two Hinds County investigators were injured and transported to the hospital with neck and shoulder injuries. They've since been released.

Authorities say the suspect got out of the vehicle after crashing, showed a weapon and fled into the woods.

Investigators recovered a second weapon, about four ounces of methamphetamine and $3,200 in the suspect's vehicle.

At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Hinds County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Chris Picou said the Aryan Brotherhood is an active and dangerous organization in the Jackson Metro.

Picou believes it plays a big role in the area's meth trade.

"They're significant, I can tell you that. In this area, the metro area, they are a significant group that's trafficking in meth," said Picou.

The Institute for the Study of Violent Groups says the Aryan Brotherhood has a presence at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County.

A 2011 "National Gang Threat Assessment - Emerging Trends" study by the FBI says the Aryan Brotherhood is a prison gang, where some members work the streets.
The FBI considers the organization an active group in Mississippi.
