11 Mississippians will be awarded the French Legion of Honor

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The French Consul General will visit Mississippi this week and will  bestow the Legion of Honor upon 11 veterans of World War II from Mississippi who helped liberate France from oppression. The ceremony will be held Tuesday at the Old Capitol Museum.

Founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the National Order of the Legion of Honor is the highest honor in France. It recognizes eminent services to the French Republic. Recipients of this honor are designated by the President of the Republic, François Hollande.

The following veterans from Mississippi have all confirmed their presence. They will receive this award in recognition of their courage:

  • Jack Carver from Belzoni, MS (Technical Sergeant, 441st Troop Carrier Group, 302nd Squadron)        
  • William S. Fuller from Vicksburg, MS (Staff Sergeant, 281st Engineer Combat Battalion)         
  • Edsol C. Wells from Lauderdale, MS  (Staff Sergeant, 394th Bomb GP, 9th Air Force)         
  • Thomas H. Creekmore from Ocean Springs, MS (Sergeant, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division)
  • William W. Correll from Madison, MS (Private First Class, 398th Infantry Regiment, 100th Division)        
  • Joseph J. Coscia from Southaven, MS (Private First Class, Company A, 319th Infantry Regiment)         
  • Joseph R. Johnson from Columbus, MS (Private First Class, Battery D, 551st Antiaircraft Artillery, Automatic Weapons Battalion)         
  • James F. Robinson from Aberdeen, MS (Private First Class, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division)         
  • Harry C. Quinn from Madison, MS (Private, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Division) -        
  • Malcolm L. Jones from Hazlehurst, MS (Gunners Mate 2nd Class, USS Raven AM 55) -        
  • Mr. Ian Campbell will accept the Legion of Honor medal on behalf of his late grandfather, Gerald M. Campbell from Gulfport, MS (Gunners Mate 3rd Class, Amphibious Force, USS LST 229).

The Consul General will also meet with Governor Phil Bryant, and visit the campuses of the University of Mississippi and the University of Southern Mississippi.

Finally, he will have the pleasure of meeting the French community in the region at a dinner organized with the Alliance Française of Jackson. Mississippi has an estimated 200 French citizens residing in the state, with 73 registered on the List of French Citizens Residing Outside of France. A dozen French companies are present in Mississippi, including Air Liquide, Eurocopter, Sanofi-Aventis, and Sodexo.

    Last minute grocery shoppers filled the aisles Wednesday.   Jessica Bowman stopped into a Hattiesburg store to see what all the activity was about. Roshunda Trody said, "Two turkeys, ham, dressing, greens cabbage, french beans with white potatoes and turkey butts in it." Hefty dinner menus for Thanksgiving day. Trody said, "I'm from Hattiesburg, MS, but I'm back in town to be with my family for the holidays and doing a little bit of last minute shopping." ...

    Fans were waiting in the parking lot Wednesday outside Hattiesburg High School for tickets to go on sale for the 5A South State Championship Friday night. The Tigers are hosting the Laurel Tornadoes in a I-59 showdown.  The game, a repeat of the "Lil' Brown Jug" game will give the Tornadoes the chance at revenge, after Hattiesburg won the rivalry game 20-14 in August.
