Pascagoula School District hosts mad scientist themed super Saturday

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Saturday's rainy weather forced most outside activities to be canceled, but it welcomed a large crowd at Super Saturday. It is a special event Pascagoula School District Superintendent Wayne Rodolfich came up with in 2009. Since then, he said it has been a big success.

"We think lots of time people get stuck in front of the television on weekends. And we want to provide that opportunity for parents to come and learn with their children and for our teachers to be able to interact with them on a different level," said Rodolfich.

This Saturday's theme was mad scientist. Rodolfich said their key community partners are what make Super Saturday exciting. Companies like Chevron, Mississippi Power, and Ingalls Shipbuilding all help by setting up exhibits at the event.

Ingalls Ship Building got involved with Super Saturday several years ago. Debbie Mclendon who is the community relations representative for Ingalls enjoys being a part of the event, and the children love the different things they learn about.

"There's usually a line for driving the boats on the computers, but today the magnets have been extremely popular and even the snap together kits.

Chevron hosted an exhibit that taught the children about static electricity. Kearston Bailey said that was her favorite part, because it's not like what you learn in school.

"It's not like the stuff they teach you at school. Chevron actually showed us how stuff works," said Bailey.

The Pascagoula School District hosts about six Super Saturday Events every year.
