Edgewater Mall's 50th birthday brings hope for many more

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

For half of a century, shoppers have come to Biloxi's shoreline to shop for the clothes and other items they need.

That's how long the Edgewater Mall has been a critical part of the Highway 90 corridor and its retail success.

Saturday, on it's 50th birthday, a celebration was held to recognize that huge milestone.

"Happy Birthday to you... Happy birthday to you," sang 7-year-old Conner Morris.

"When we opened here in 1963, we opened with 11 stores. Today there are well over 100," said Michelle Rogers, marketing director at the Edgewater Mall.

Rogers said it's not everyday you celebrate the birthday of a shopping center, but when a mall becomes a symbol of strength and longevity, festivities are in order.

"It's sort of like just the meeting place along the Coast, for old and young alike. For some of the older ones, I think they can remember even when the mall was built," said Rogers.

That's a familiar day to Rosharon Bahm.

"It was kind of neat because it was the first indoor shopping area in this area," said Bahm. "It was before my daughter was born and then now, I'm coming with my granddaughter."

Bahm says it hasn't lost its appeal over the years.

"I love the mall," said Conner.

Kids of all ages lined up to pose with Spider-Man, get their faces painted, and of course, eat some birthday cake.

"Thank you for supporting Edgewater Mall over the years," said Rogers.

It was a day of happy birthdays, followed by a hope for many more.
