Your Week in Review: Sept. 20

The mass shooting at the Navy Yard, the United Nations' report about Syria's chemical weapons and the pope's words about gays and lesbians all made headlines this week. The mass shooting at the Navy Yard, the United Nations' report about Syria's chemical weapons and the pope's words about gays and lesbians all made headlines this week.

(RNN) - A shooter opened fire at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC, on Monday, killing 12 people.

Police shot and killed the suspect, Aaron Alexis, who reportedly had full security clearance to the Navy Yard. Alexis, who was identified through fingerprints, worked for Hewlett Packard as a subcontractor for the Navy. Alexis told police officers weeks before the attack that he was hearing voices. But investigators have not yet found a manifesto or other writings to suggest a motive for the killings.

A report from the United Nations found that chemical weapons were used in an attack in Syria in late August. The report did not say who was responsible for the attack.

Pope Francis said in a Jesuit magazine that the church should not interfere spiritually in the lives of gays and lesbians. He also brushed off critics who say he should be more vocal about fighting abortion and gay marriage.
