A man threatening to jump from a sign across Interstate 20 closed Highway 49 for about an hour Wednesday morning.

Pearl Police say 25-year-old Brandon Merritt of Columbia, MS, said he had climbed the sign to avoid being taken to jail or the hospital after running off the side of I-20 and getting his car stuck.

Merritt reportedly told authorities he had been awake for four days straight while on a crystal meth binge. He is being held for further evaluation and treatment at UMMC.

Pearl Police Officer John Chalk and Pearl firefighter Sammy Williams were able to talk Merritt down. The investigation is ongoing.
