HOLMES COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Holmes County man is accused of severely beating his girlfriend's 3-year-old son.

Authorities say 36-year-old Kevin Cowans was arrested after the child was taken to the hospital with welts all over his body from what appeared to be a whipping.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Sunday in Durant.

The 3-year-old is listed in stable condition and is said to be doing well.

Cowans is facing felony child abuse and domestic violence charges.

Authorities say the boy's mother is not facing any charges at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
