MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

The George County Sheriff's Office arrested 34-year-old Chadwick Brian Whittington of Moss Point on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine.

According to George County Sheriff Dean Howell, on Saturday, George County Sheriff's Narcotics Agents and the Mississippi Highway Patrol worked a joint safety checkpoint on Highway 63 South.

Whittington reportedly attempted to avoid that checkpoint by turning into a drive away.

Howell said Whittington then got out of the SUV and got back in and headed onto Highway 63. Because authorities found that suspicious they decided to pull him over.

Howell said when Whittington was stopped deputies reported smelling a strong odor of intoxicants.
That's when the suspect admitted to drinking beer, Howell said.

Deputies found a camouflage book bag on the ground. Inside the bag was eight clear bags with methamphetamine and several forms of narcotics paraphernalia, Howell explained.

There was also a bottle of pills with Whittington's name on the label, however, the suspect denied the bag was his, Howell said. Whittington said he denied the bag being his because he was currently out on probation and didn't want to go back to prison.

The suspect was taken the George Regional Jail, but was released on bond.
