BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

It's time to scrub the Coast Coliseum from top to bottom. For the past few weeks, workers have been doing intensive cleaning by pressure washing the exterior walls of the building and the sidewalks. On Tuesday, crews started on the roof. They explained that cleaning the roof is a delicate process that if not done right can do more harm than good.

Seven years ago the Coast Coliseum got a new roof. That's how long dirt has been building up over the 100,000 square foot surface.

"We're cleaning off the exhaust particles and rubber from tires from vehicles," said Anthony Frontiero of R&A Pressure Washing. "Then just dirt and grime and a little bit of algae that builds up on that big of a surface."

The best cleaning tools are soap and water, but for crews it's not that simple. Coliseum officials brought in an expert with Neoguard, the company that installed the roof, to oversee the cleaning. That's because if a specific detergent and certain technique aren't used there's a risk of damaging the roof's protective coating.

Horst Proebstl of Neoguard said, "A lot of people will get up there with really high pressure machines and it will blow the coating right off to where it has to be repaired. So you don't want to use high pressure, pressure washers. It will not only hurt the coating, it will hurt the foam underneath it."

The locally based company, whose employees all have full time jobs as Biloxi firefighters, said they're happy to be sprucing up an icon in their town.

"I think there isn't anyone down here that doesn't know about the Coast Coliseum, so certainly it's a lot of exposure and we're happy for that," Frontiero said. "We just want to get branching out more and more."

"Just gives it a nice bright finish," said Proebstl. "You see that white roof coming from way down the street and it kind of symbolizes where you're at."

Crews expect the roof cleaning to take about a week depending on the weather.
