Police: Sex offender living near school, working at fair

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A convicted sex offender is in trouble again because police say he's been defying the very purpose of the sex offender registry. Christopher Fitrakis was a registered sex offender in Michigan who Murfreesboro police said was hiding out in Tennessee.

"He was unregistered, living within a thousand feet of a school," said Kyle Evans of the Murfreesboro Police Department. "It's completely unacceptable."

Police said they found Fitrakis living with roommates at an East Main Street home close to Central Magnet School where he'd been for more than a month. Classified as a violent offender whose victim was a child, police said Fitrakis moved to Murfreesboro without contacting authorities in Michigan or Tennessee.

"His victim in this case was a juvenile, and there are special restrictions that when you have juvenile victims, come into play here," said Evans.

Police said Fitrakis' roommates told them he'd recently worked at a local fair south of Murfreesboro in July.

"His occupation is as a carnival ride operator," said Evans. "That, in itself, means that he's working in and around children on a daily basis, and it's something that we're very concerned about."

Fitrakis has now been added to the Tennessee Sexual Offender Registry and has been listed as living at the Rutherford County Jail since his arrest. Fitrakis has been charged with failing to report his primary residence with the sex offender registry. A warrant has also been taken out for a school restriction violation.
