COVINGTON COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - It's called "Magnolia Project," if you go online to themagnoliaproject.org you see places such as The Cheesecake Factory, a mall, a Magic Johnson theater and even SeaWorld coming to the Pine Belt. Ever since the website appeared it has caught a lot of attention from residents.
"There's nothing about it on the Mississippi official tourism bureau website, there's nothing about it at the Mississippi Arts Council website, so I think that it's someone's dream to do this and I hope their dream comes true," said resident, Nell Cobb.
According to the website, a ground breaking ceremony for the project is scheduled for October 8. The development is said to include 200 acres in Forrest County and approximately 300 acres in Covington County.
Owner of part of the land, which is located off HWY 49 North near the Covington County line, has confirmed that something is going on in his property, but any information given on it would have to wait until October 8.
The Strategic Operations Executive for the project, Phyllis McCullum, has been contacted numerous times and so far she has canceled two interviews. McCullum also chose not to interview when a visit was made to her office on Wednesday. After the story on the project aired at 6 p.m. that same day, McCullum called News 7 and said a press conference regarding the project is scheduled for next week at the Convention Center. Until then, no interview will be given.
For now, the website is all the information we can get on the so called "Magnolia Project."
