HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg area law enforcement community is continuing to reach out and help a local officer who's battling cancer. A live and silent auction for Lamar County Deputy Dean Stephens was held at Brewsky's club on West 4th Street Tuesday night.

Dozens of donated items were up for bid and folks were entertained by plenty of live music.

Stephens has been fighting a rare form of lymphoma for the past couple of months. Although his cancer is in remission, he wasn't able to attend the event.

"Unfortunately, he still has a tough journey ahead of him," said Deputy Keith Crawford with the Lamar County Sheriff's Dept. Crawford was one of the organizers of the auction. "He's still in treatment. He's under probably one of the tougher treatments as we speak right now, so our hearts are with him tonight," Crawford said.

A fund has been set up at BancorpSouth to collect donations for Deputy Stephens.
