PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Petal School District was designated as "storm ready" on Tuesday. Local schools have teamed with the National Weather Service and county emergency management officials to ensure the safety of students and faculty.
Part of being "storm ready" includes extensive planning and preparation. Communication between the National Weather Service, schools, and students' parents is key. Under this new system, students will not only be safer during the school day but also during after-school activities, such as sporting events and field trips.
"This is one hundred percent about making the Petal School District a safer place for kids to be," says Dr. John Buchanan, Superintendent of the Petal School District.
The Pine Belt is setting the standard for storm ready schools in Mississippi. The Petal School District is one of two districts in the state to earn this recognition. The other school district is Forrest County.
