Southern Miss football fans enjoy tailgating activities before the first home game of the year Saturday.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Thousands of Southern Miss football fans enjoyed a pre-game tradition Saturday that's almost as old as football itself. They gathered all across the Hattiesburg campus for various tailgating activities before the opening game of the 2013 season between USM and Texas State University.
They enjoyed food, beverages and meeting new friends. Many of them were wearing black-and-gold caps or T-shirts.
"Everybody is excited," said USM student Tyler Harris. "The food's going, we're grilling, we're ready for the game," he said.
"It's like family out here," said USM fan Brian Brown.
"I wish it was a little bit cooler, but the food's good, the drinks are cold, so what can you do," said USM graduate John Hackney.
"We're having a good time, people out here are very friendly," said USM fan Chris Ann Brown.
It will be a while before fans can tailgate again. USM's next home game is against Florida International University on Oct. 5.
