Jasper County man found guilty of murdering his wife

JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A Jasper County man will spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury found him guilty on Thursday of murdering his wife two years ago.

Authorities say Shannon Rayner, a former Jackson police officer, murdered his wife on Valentine's Day 2011 and burned their house down to try and hide the crime.

The jury found Rayner guilty of murder but not guilty of the arson charge.

Testimony during the trial indicated Shannon and Sonya argued the day before the murder when they went to a bank to have the victim's name removed from a joint bank account. The next day Sonya Rayner's body was found inside the burned out house on Summerland Road.

A Jasper County jury deliberated about four-and-a-half hours on Thursday before finding Rayner guilty of murder.
