Trial underway for former cop accused of Bay Springs murder

BAY SPRINGS, MS (WDAM) - Testimony started Tuesday in a trial where a former Jackson police officer is accused of murdering his wife in February, 2011.

The state's first witness, a bank teller, testified that the couple, Shannon and Sonya Rayner, came into Bank Plus on Old Canton Road, the day before the alleged murder. The teller said that they were there to remove the victim's name off the account. The teller said the victim seemed very nervous while the suspect appeared to be agitated and very vocal. The teller said the two later got in an altercation in the bank parking lot.

Less than 24 hours later, on the morning of February 15, a Bay Springs resident report a house fire on Summerland Road. Thomas Boyd, who was Fire Chief at the time, testified that the victim's body was in the home and burned badly. There was also a large amount of blood was soaked into the carpet adjacent to the body.

Court is schedule to resume Wednesday morning at 9.
