HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Since a judge declared last Thursday for a special election in the Hattiesburg mayoral race, more than 100 people have registered to vote.
Forrest County Circuit Clerk Lou Ellen Adams says that many of those people registered on Friday and continued to register early in the week.
"It's all ages and groups," says Adams. "They're just registering."
Governor Phil Bryant said Monday he will soon sign an order for a special election to be held in Hattiesburg "on or about" September 24.
"We're going to do all within our power to make sure that this is a fair election," says Bryant.
Voters must be registered 30 days prior to the election in order to be eligible to vote. If the election falls exactly on September 24, the last day to register to vote will be Monday, August 26.
"When they come in here and register and I stamp file their application, that's when the thirty days starts," says Adams.
Thirty-seven percent of registered voters participated in the June election.
