February 10, 2013 is not a date that Pine Belt residents will soon forget. Many people are still recovering from the tornado that ravaged the area just over six months ago.
"It has been a day by day process to get to this point where we are now," says Sandra Gunn, a Hattiesburg resident whose home was devastated by the EF-4 tornado.
"It is amazing to me that we didn't have anybody killed," recalls Terry Steed, the director of the Forrest County Emergency Management. "The other thing that amazes me about this area is that immediately after a disaster, people start helping each other."
Emergency management crews teamed with local volunteers to clean up the area after the disaster. For months after, their continued support has helped many victims get back on their feet.
Although there has been a lot of progress, the road the recovery is a long one. There is still much work to be done.
