Columbia nurse charged with stealing from her 105-year-old patient

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A home health nurse has been arrested by Columbia Police for allegedly stealing around $10,000 in cash and jewelry from two elderly patients. One alleged victim is a 105-year-old lady.

Police said 23-year-old Lillianna Penton of Mount Olive was entrusted as a home health nurse in the Columbia area before she allegedly began stealing from her elderly patients.

Columbia Police Detective Mike Cooper said Penton is charged with stealing jewelry and cash from at least two victims. A 105-year-old woman and 89-year-old woman both in the Columbia area. The value of the items stolen amounts to over $10,000.

Penton was fired from her job as a hospice nurse with St. Joseph's Hospice prior to her arrest.

Det. Mike cooper said, "It's a sad situation. These people are trusted to take care of these elderly people and their families are trusting these nurses to come into their home to take care of them and they're actually stealing from them, and that's one thing we aren't going to tolerate."

Lillianna Penton resides in the Marion County Jail charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult and remains on a hold for Marion County investigators to assess additional charges.
