Laurel Police Chief plans a mentor program

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Laurel Police Chief Tyrone Stewart plans to mentor children and hopefully put them on the path to success.

Chief Stewart said there are too many children wasting their lives away and he believes that's because many community leaders are not taking time to be mentors.

Stewart is holding a "I Have Something to Say" Rally on Friday night at Oak Park Elementary starting at 6 p.m. Stewart said he with hopes to build relationship between students, parents, and community leaders.

Stewart said it's time to lead the way for the next generation.

    The campus of William Carey was calm as the clock struck midnight and the date turned to January 21, 2017. Then-freshman soccer player Taylor Gautreaux turned in at about 1 a.m. She would be awoken two hours later to the sounds of a violent tornado just outside her dorm room wall.
