Fires keep ETX departments busy, limit visibility for motorists

UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A major highway in Upshur County was blocked Tuesday due to thick smoke from nearby fires reducing visibility in the area.

Traffic was blocked on Highway 300, south of Farm-to-Market Road 726.

Upshur County fire officials said there were four 'spot' fires along Highway 300. They said the fires were called in around 6:15p.m. Tuesday and was contained within the hour.

There have been several fires keeping East Texas fire crews busy. As of 7p.m., Texas A&M Forest Service crews were called to assist local departments with eight fires in East Texas, totaling 85 acres scorched.

Fires were reported Tuesday in Anderson, Cass, Harrison, Nacogdoches, Rusk, Shelby, Titus and Upshur Counties.
