LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of Laurel school teachers gathered with school administrators Thursday morning for an annual, back-to-school celebration.

The 2 1/2 hour event, held at Life Church, featured several guest speakers and a keynote address from Laurel School Superintendent Dr. Chuck Benigno.

He said the theme for the event and the 180-day school year is "The Love and Energy Tour."

"My hope is that they're energized, that they believe this is going to be the greatest year in their educational careers, and let's go take care of the children of Laurel," said Benigno.

"There's a lot of energy," and Lauren Walters, a history teacher at Laurel High School. "All of the kids are on their best behavior, so we really enjoy it as teachers and everybody is just excited to be back together and get back to business," she said.

"We've had a refreshing summer, we've been thinking about what we're going to do and you come here and it just puts the nails in and ties it all together and gets us ready to go out and teach," said Shelley Rivers, a language arts teacher at Nora Davis Magnet School.

The Laurel School District has 3,000 students.
