Columbia School District enlists quarter mile walk zone for city schools

The school board voted in favor of the new walk zones, which take effect the first day of school. School buses won't pick up students living within a quarter mile radius of the primary, elementary, middle, and high schools. Columbia School District Transportation Director Steve Harmon says the school district has spent a lot of time preparing for the change. Many school districts in the area impose a 1 mile walk zone. The initiative was proposed to save money and spur exercise, and is expected to save the Columbia School District between $50,000-$75,000. If parents have questions about the walk zone the principals at each school have a list of who is in or outside of the bus radius.
