TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Imagine logging on to the Internet, and receiving a pop-up message telling you the Federal Bureau of Investigation is freezing your computer. It happens to thousands of people every day, and it's a scam.

Worse, the virus demands credit card payment to unlock the computer. The malware has stolen thousands from innocent victims.

The Better Business Bureau says this message is not from the FBI. The virus can even install software that enables scammers to steal the identity of the user.

The BBB says to never input credit card information when told the FBI is freezing a computer. If the computer is in fact frozen, take it to an expert to have the virus removed.

The best way to prevent the FBI virus from freezing your computer is to keep anti-virus software up to date.
