LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Teachers, parents, school administrators and students in Lamar County gathered Wednesday morning to tour a new elementary school which will host its first classes next week. An open house was held for the Oak Grove Longleaf Elementary School.

It's a K-5th grade facility located on West 4th Street and can accommodate more than 700 students. It cost about $9 million to build and was financed through the school district's 16th section principal fund.

School officials say the new school was needed because of growth in the district.

"It was built on the exact same plans as the new elementary schools at Sumrall, Purvis and in Oak Grove," said Dr. Ben Burnett, superintendent of schools for Lamar County. "So, the floor plan is exactly the same, including the cafeteria, the multi-purpose building, the layout," he said.

"I'm just so thankful and grateful for all of the support that we have had," said Angela McCarty, principal of Oak Grove Longleaf Elementary School. "The community has just embraced it wholeheartedly, and for that I'm thankful," she said.

Classes at the school begin next Wednesday.

Though she stands at just 4-foot-10, Aimee Durn is a force for the Jones County Junior College women's soccer club. The short freshman from England is a big reason the Lady Bobcats are 5-0-1. "They say big things come in small packages and that's very true for Aimee," said tenth-year JCJC women's soccer coach Dolores Deasley.
