His nickname was "the Sandman."
Sam Young, a native of Lake Charles, LA moved to Scottsdale and made the desert his home. He also made a career as a welterweight mixed martial arts fighter.
Young, 33, was training for an MMA match at a Scottsdale gym when he collapsed Wednesday evening. The father of two was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner has not yet determined the cause of his death and could not say if his training or fighting were a contributing factor in his death.
Young was also a personal trainer at Maximum Fitness and the Keep Punching gym, both in Scottsdale. Michael King is a manager at the newly-opened, Keep Punching and one of Young's close friends.
"I got the call," King said. "Just said he was gone."
King called Young's death "shocking." The 33-year-old father appeared to be very healthy and exercised every day.
"He wanted to do something for his family," King said. "He could fight."
King and other trainers are now picking up where Young left off as a trainer to help his family.
According to King, trainers will continue working with Young's clients from the Keep Punching gym and all proceeds will benefit Young's family.
Young leaves behind a wife and two children.
