Academy gets dozens of Hattiesburg children geared up for school

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Back-to-school shopping just got easier for many parents thanks to Academy Sports and Outdoors on Highway 98 in Hattiesburg.

Thirty kids from the YMCA of Hattiesburg each received a $100 gift card on Thursday. Each child was paired up with an employee and shopped around the store for uniforms, backpacks, shoes and other school supplies.

“You can't put a price on the faces of these kids when they're getting brand new uniforms, shoes, belts, anything like that,” said Academy’s Logistic Manager, Scott Davis. “You can't put a price on it, it's so comforting to see that.”

The children were chosen based on their financial needs and thanks to Academy's Annual Back-to-School Donations, many of them now have new clothes and a new pair of shoes.

“People need to realize how important it is to give back to this community,” said Executive Director of Family YMCA, Dan Henley. “I just want to, you know, once again thank Academy.”

The tax free weekend is scheduled for July 26 - 27. It applies only to clothing and shoes under $100, and is intended to help out parents with their annual back-to-school shopping efforts.
