There were a lot of issues for the Southern Miss football team last season besides the lack of production on offense.
With a defense ranked 116th in the nation in points allowed, there is definitely some room for improvement.
The Golden Eagles allowed teams to score 34 points in more than 9 of their 12 games last season.
Some of the blame can be laid on the fact that they had to stay on the field longer due to a poor offense, but the black and gold don't want to make any excuses.
Linebacker Alan Howze hopes that with a familiar face in defensive coordinator Dave Duggan in charge, the defense can return to past success.
"Coach Duggan recruited me so it felt good just knowing that because the defense that he brought in was something we were able to recall pretty easy," Howze said.
"Going throughout spring we were able to pick it up. It feels like second nature."
