HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The sixty fourth annual Mississippi Miss Hospitality pageant kicked off Sunday leading up to the competition this weekend.

Thirty-nine contestants moved in to the University of Southern Mississippi campus Sunday as they prepare for a week of rehearsals for Friday and Saturday's pageant. But it's not all work and no play- the contestants have a week filled with activities in the Hub City. From taking an official tour of Hattiesburg to visiting to the zoo to a visit with ARC (Association for the Rights of Citizens with Developmental Disabilities), the contestants will see all sides of what makes Mississippi the Hospitality State.

Along with the coveted title, the winners will also be rewarded scholarships. This year the pageant is offering over $100,00 in scholarships from almost every college and university in Mississippi. Contestants will compete in three different areas of interviews throughout the week before stepping on stage Friday. The on-stage portion of the competition will have an evening gown division as well as Miss Hospitality's signature competition known as the Little Black Dress commercial, where the contestant promotes her hometown through a twenty-second speech.

"This program builds great interview skills for these young ladies," says pageant director Nicole Ruhnke. "It also provides them the opportunity to share their passion and their pride for their hometowns and for the state of Mississippi, all while representing and promoting the tourism and economic development programs within our state."

Opening night will be this Friday at 8:00 at the Saenger Theatre. The second and final night of competition will be Saturday at 8:00 where the Top 10 and Mississippi's Miss Hospitality 2013 will be announced. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.hattiesburgsaenger.com or by calling the box office at (601)-584-4888.
