Bullard solar car involved in accident late Saturday

The solar car built by a team of the students from Bullard High School was involved in an accident late Saturday night.

According to Cullen Hippler, the financial and publicity director of the team, the solar car was being transported to the Texas Motor Speedway in a covered trailer when the accident happened on Interstate 35 Saturday night.

Reports indicate a motorcyclist hydroplaned on the roadway and that forced a vehicle to swerve in front of the truck towing the solar car. The truck then rear-ended that vehicle.

Cullen says that the truck towing the solar car did receive some damage, and that the solar car also received minor damage as a result of the accident. The trailer fell off of the trailer hitch and that the solar car did need some minor adjustments and fixes. He tells us that the wheel alignment was off and that they had to adjust it to get it ready. There was also a small hole in the outer shell plastic. The team patched that hole up.

Sunday morning the team passed the electrical and frame inspection, with the brake and other tests to be completed sometime Sunday and Monday. The race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
