Hattiesburg residents take part in Trayvon Martin National Day of Action

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

In accordance with Reverend Al Sharpton's request, many Hattiesburg residents and the local NAACP participated in the Trayvon Martin National Day of Action on Saturday.

After rallying for an hour at the intersection of Highway 49 and Hardy Street, residents then moved the rally to the local courthouses in Downtown Hattiesburg.

More than 500 individuals participated in the event in order to pressure The Justice Department to move forward with a civil rights trial against George Zimmerman.

"This proves that there's a voice in these communities that are concerned with what's going on, and they will not be silent," said Mt. Carmel Baptist Church pastor, Kenneth Fairley.

Along with the rally, Hattiesburg residents also took part in a march on Friday.
