The town of Mize has welcomed thousands of visitors for an annual event that celebrates one of the area's top crops. The 35th annual Mississippi Watermelon Festival featured live music, a classic car show, arts and crafts and watermelon eating contests.

It's a fund raiser for the Mize Volunteer Fire Department.

"This is our chance to showcase our town and our community, show them what a great little, small town we are, what a great place to live, what a great community, how friendly and clean we are," said Terresa Stewart, assistant fire chief and festival organizer.

"Well, it brings back old memories and every year, it grows," said Margarette Morgan, a Mize native who now lives in Laurel.

Stewart hoped to raise up to $8,000 at the event.
