FAA investigating after plane lands safely on US 321

GRANITE FALLS, NC (WBTV) -

The pilot of a single engine plane is lucky to be alive after he reportedly ran out of gas while flying over parts of Caldwell County Monday night.

As he approached the town of Granite Falls around 11pm, the pilot made the decision to land the plane on US 321 nears the Wal-Mart Supercenter, according to Caldwell County communications reports.

Witnesses told WBTV News that the pilot's name is Eric Klein of Newton, NC.

The witness who talked to Klein also said Klein attempted to land in the parking lot of the Walmart but there was too much traffic.

He then used the headlights of cars along Highway 321 in order to set the plane down on the road, the witness said.

The pilot was not injured and no one on the ground was hurt. The FAA, NC Highway Patrol and the Caldwell County Sheriff's office is investigating.
