New Lamar County School to open despite road construction

Posted: Updated:
LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

The new Oak Grove Long Leaf Elementary School is due to open when the kids go back to school next month.

The school is located along West 4th Street in Lamar County. The roadway in front of the school from Cross Creek Parkway west to Jackson Road is currently under construction and will be so throughout the school year.

Because of all the rain this year the construction has been delayed. County officials met with the contractor at the site of the construction to come up with a plan on how to safely get school busses and vehicles to the school while the construction is ongoing.

Project Engineer Jason Lamb says when school opens on August 7th there will be a hard surface to the school either from Cross Creek Parkway west to the school entrance or from Gravel Pit Road east to the entrance.

Work began on the project in the spring and is expected to take about 14-months. Lamb says despite the rain the project is a little ahead of schedule.
