45 firefighters battle 3 suspicious fires in Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

Police are investigating a rare occurrence in Rutherford County. A triple arson has police and firefighters anxious to find the person responsible.

All three fires happened on the same road at around the same time early Friday morning.

The first fire started at an abandoned mobile home around 12:04 a.m. on Factory Road.

While firefighters were putting that fire out, a vacant home just a short distance away caught on fire about an hour later.

And just after the house fire, the Rutherford County fire chief said there was an attempted fire at a third location, which was extinguished quickly.

About 45 firefighters from five different fire departments were called to fight the fires, which were apparently the work of a criminal fire starter. Investigators found wadded up newspaper and other clothes at the scenes.

"Being fire, arson, that's really scary, because I've got grandkids who come over and stay the night over here," said neighbor Billy Miller.

Murfreesboro police say they are actively eliminating suspects, because especially with a crime this far-reaching, it causes a lot of damage and a lot of heartache for the community.

One of the homes belonged to Bobby and Debbie Cook, who had just retired and moved to Sparta. Selling the house was going to make retirement easier for the couple.

"I'm glad I got my home pictures out of there. The last time we were here, we got up in the attic and got the family photos and stuff. If we didn't, we'd have lost that, too. It would've been a good place to raise kids, for somebody," Debbie Cook said.

Investigators say they don't believe any of the victims are connected. Rather, they think the locations of the fires were selected at random.

Call 1-800-762-3017 if you can help in the case. You could earn a cash award of up to $1,500.
