Pine Belt residents become host family for orphan

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

More than 150 international orphans arrived at the Atlanta International Airport on Sunday.

The orphans from Latvia and Ukraine are part of Project 143, a non-profit organization that helps 143-million orphans worldwide experience living with a family in the United States.

Ilja, a 14-year old boy from Latvia, is part of the organization, and thanks to Cindy and Chuck Lick, Ilja will be spending his next five weeks in Hattiesburg.

“We’ve been empty nesters for a while and so with Ilja coming in here, it’s just been really good,” said Chuck.

By living with the Lick family, Ilja will not only develop the ability to speak the English language fluently, but he will also experience things he's never done or seen before.

“We've been swimming and playing in the yard,” said Cindy.

During his time in the U.S., Cindy and Chuck just hope to make a difference in Ilja's life.

“I just hope that he see's Jesus in us these next five weeks,” said Cindy. “He may not have an earthly father, but we just want him to know that he has a heavenly father that loves him unconditionally.”
