HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Physicians, administrators and staff with Hattiesburg Clinic announced plans Thursday to construct a new 80,000 square foot Heart & Vascular Center.

The four-story facility will be located on the Forrest General Hospital campus south of the main entrance and will house Hattiesburg Clinic's cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery and vascular specialists and Forrest General Hospital's Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.

Construction should begin in about a month.

"The facility will house our eleven cardiologists, our three cardiovascular surgeons and our four vascular surgeons, as well as 100 employees," said Tommy Thornton, executive director of Hattiesburg Clinic.

"It obviously allows us the opportunity to grow and we are growing," said Dr. Tom Messer, executive medical director for Forrest General Hospital's cardiovascular services. "We're adding new imaging modalities and we're growing in terms of the number of patients we serve and the number of physicians that are in the group," Messer said.

Construction should be completed by the fall of 2014.
