Dr. Tommy King, president of William Carey University, auctioned off a $20,000 scholarship at the very end of Sumrall's annual Fourth of July parade on Thursday.

Although King expected to auction off the scholarship around Christmastime, it was awarded to a graduate student who placed a last minute bid for $4,900.

Graham, who has a Bachelor of Science in biology research from Mississippi College, is about begin his second year of medical school at William Carey University.

The scholarship was originally for whichever upcoming college freshman placed the highest bid, but Dr. King approved it for a graduate student after Graham placed the highest bid.

Graham is pleased with the deal, because he can pay the $4,900 over a 4-year period.

"Even though the cost of medical school is around $40,000, this is going to help me out a lot," Graham said.

He can claim his scholarship in August.
