Petal officials plan to close senior center

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

After deciding to keep the Petal Senior Center open less than a year ago, officials have now changed their minds and have decided to close it.

According to Petal Mayor Hal Marx, the Petal Board of Aldermen voted 5 - 2 to relocate the Petal Senior Center programs to the Civic Center. By doing so, Mayor Marx says the city will save up to $25,000 a year. He says the senior center will be leased out to The 3-D School since they've outgrown their own facility.

The recreation department is expected to begin moving Monday night and senior programs should begin at the Petal Civic Center July 15.

Mayor Marx says nothing is changing except the location. He says lunch will still be provided to seniors everyday as well as breakfast on Thursdays.
