Home brewing of beer legalized in Mississippi

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Beer enthusiasts no longer have to go to the local watering hole to get their favorite lager. Thanks to the home brewing law that was enforced on July 1, they can now make beer in the comfort of their own home.

Hattiesburg resident Greer Whitacre has been brewing beer for more than forty years.

"I really like to do it for myself and for my friends," he said. "I enjoy the beer, and I enjoy sharing it with friends."

Mississippi is one of the last states to make what many consider a hobby, legal. The state follows federal guidelines, limiting one hundred gallons of beer per adult, or two hundred gallons per household.

This new law comes just one year after the state legalized the sales of craft beers, which raised the legal alcohol content in beers from five to eight percent.

An estimated 2,000 home brewers are in Mississippi, which is a small amount of the nearly 1 million home brewers across the country.
