HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is reminding holiday motorists that troopers will be out in force, making sure that our state roadways remain safe this 4th of July. The special holiday period for that agency began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and will run through midnight Sunday.

Extra troopers will be on duty throughout that time, to handle the expected increase in traffic on the highways.

Special license checkpoints will also be conducted at various locations in the coming days.

"Our priority is keeping the public safe on the highways and we ask the public to obey the speed limit, pay attention to the roadways, be aware of their surroundings, what's in front of you and to the immediate right and left of you," said Trooper First Class Brent Barfield with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Barfield also reminds folks if they drink alcohol over the holiday, make sure they have a designated driver ready to get behind the wheel. And he said to make sure you always buckle your seat belt.
