Fireworks and pets don't make good bedfellows

Posted: Updated:

The highlight for many families during the 4th of July holiday is the watching and setting off fireworks, but for some members of the family fireworks can be very frightening.

During the holiday, more dogs end up missing than any other time of the year. The noise and smell of the fireworks scare many dogs and they end up running off.

Katherine Sammons, Southern Pines Animal Shelter Operations Manager, says if you have outside dogs or cats it's best to bring them inside when the fireworks are going on. She says that especially during the holiday make sure your pets have their collar and tag on at all times so they be easily identified when found.

'Those are some of the things you can do if you lose your pet," said Sammons. "It's more important though to be proactive and prevent them from running away or getting lost. So my advice is to bring your pets inside and keep them secure."

If your pet does run off, Sammons says to check all area shelters and veterinarians to see if it's been brought in. She recommends going to the shelters in person and keep checking back every couple of days .
