Eight new members join Conference USA

Posted: Updated:

With the college sports landscape in a state of constant change the last few years, one thing was made certain Monday morning. Conference USA added eight new members to make a 16 school league.

After the departures of Houston, SMU, Central Florida, and Memphis, C-USA has eight new members to fill the conference. Charlotte, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, and Texas-San Antonio officially joined Conference USA Monday. Although Southern Miss loses four of its closest rivals that are leaving the conference, interim athletic director Jeremy McClain thinks the level of competition will remain high. "Each institution coming in brings its own strength whether it's in baseball, football, or basketball," McClain said Monday. ""I think you'll see some great competition brought to the conference."

McClain also added that despite the loss of close rivals with realignment, he believes new rivalries will be born in the near future. "You hate to lose those rivalries with Memphis and Houston and others, but I think we'll see some of that kind of reborn very quickly with some of the new institutions coming in."
