Lower food tax, 'Guns in trunks' among new laws now in effect

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Dozens of new state laws will take effect Monday.

Most of them are minor adjustments to existing laws affecting everything from taxes to health care.

Among the notable changes is a reduction in the state sales tax on food, moving it from 5.25 percent down to 5 percent.

Another measure will reform Tennessee's wholesale beer tax.  Brewers will now be taxed by the volume produced instead of the price of their products.

Other changes include a law allowing handgun permit holders to keep their guns in cars at all times, the 'Jacob Nunley Act,' which requires all incoming public college students to receive meningitis vaccines, and a measure that allows home-schooled students to participate in public school athletic programs.
