'Guns in Trunks' law takes effect July 1

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

One of the most hotly debated issues on Capitol Hill takes effect on Monday.

The so-called "Guns in Trunks" law will allow permit holders to leave their guns in their cars at work.

Permit holders will be able to leave their guns in their cars at work, even if their employer bans guns in their parking lots.

But even though it's legal, packing heat might still get you fired.

The new law impacts all parking lots, even those on college campuses and schools.

The attorney general issued an opinion last month that the new law only decriminalizes leaving a gun in your car at work. But he said it won't keep employers from firing permit holders who leave a gun in their car.

Gun rights groups have called the new law a travesty.

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey has said the attorney general's opinion is just an opinion and doesn't reflect the Legislature's intent.

It's unclear how many employees will actually risk it.

Second Amendment groups are demanding that the state Legislature come back and fix the law next year.
