Children of Mississippi Guard members attend camp at Camp Shelby

CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

More than 100 children of Mississippi National Guard members are attending a unique summer camp this week at Camp Shelby.

It's called Kid's Annual Training and it has been taking place at the camp for the past 21-years.

During the week the campers participate in different activities that educate them in a fun way on what military service is all about and shows them some of what their parents experience on a day today basis..

Thursday was aviation day at the camp where the kids got to experience aviation aspects from the different branches of the armed services.

"Everything we do involves teams, from buddy teams, to squads, to units," said Major Johnny Walter, Director Family Programs, for Mississippi National Guard. "It builds pride and relationships, esprir-de-corp with-in our units."

For the second year in a row, Deborah Collins, wife of Mississippi National Guard Adjutant General Augustus Collins visited the camp.
